her: Trucks are big. They are hard to park in small spaces. Trucks waste a lot of gas. If you buy a truck you are dumb.
me: What if I had a big heavy boat?
her: Amendment: unless you need to move a large ass object, such as a boat, then it's acceptable...mostly because the boat is cool.
so... I mostly agree with her, trucks should be bought if you are going to USE them. But trucks ARE cool, not just boats. Haha.
This was in response to her being bored, so I suggested she write some articles for my truck blog and well... You can see how that went. I can hope right? See... My thinking is she's an English major, so she knows how to write, but the passion isn't there, hahaha.
I know pictured above is not a truck, but it is a badass looking boat and my current favorite SUV. Which is based off of an F-150, so there's that.

Boat is just an old English word for "Hole in the water one throws money into"
The Jalopnik equivalent might just be "Racecar" :)
And no one complains about towing a flatbed trailer with a racecar on the back...

You don't use a boat every day to go get groceries though do you?
There is a reason the F-150 is the most selling car in America. And it is NOT because all those buyers are using it to go off-road and haul things. It is because they buy it with the off-chance that one day a year they might need it to go to IKEA. It is stupid.

My parents have a couple of boats, neither of which takes much in the way of upkeep. They've got a 21' Grady White powerboat, the main operating expense of which is fuel. It gets about 8 mpg. They also have a 14' sailboat with a little putt putt ripcord-start motor for getting around harbors.
Instead of a truck to haul them around, they bought a house on the water to park them at. They own zero trucks. The sailboat is light enough that they can trailer it with my mom's Acura MDX, and the power boat, my dad just motors over to the marina where he puts it up for winter storage.

Depends how you use your boat, if you put a lot of hours on it, especially if they are at higher rpm's, yes, they are moneypits. If you use it to relax in the middle of your local lake and some other random things, then it's not so bad.

My boat costs $2k to rack on the river and about $500 a year to winterize. Other than that it I spend about $600 a season in fuel for wakeboarding and goofing around. So no, it's not a money pit but it's only a couple of years old and has a warranty.

Haha yeah, trucks are starting to encroach on the mileage some sedans are getting currently, so it certainly is becoming more realistic to have a truck as a daily driver.
For me it'd be fine since my commute is only 10 minutes. Who cares what mileage I get? I do a little bit actually, it still adds up to about 400 miles a week, which is just a little more than one tank on the SHO. So the cost isn't negligible.

I don't think you have...
I imagine it's because they don't want to take away from F-150 sales, it's almost the size of an F-150 anyway and they figure fuel economy improvements in the F-150 will make the Ranger irrelevant here. Or did they allude to something more than that?
MontegoMan562 is a Capri RS Owner
> Yowen - not necessarily not spaghetti and meatballs
09/19/2014 at 13:25 | 0 |
You're close.
They really don't think people will buy the Ranger.
Which I assure you may be as tall as an F150 in Hi-Rider configuration it's drastically skinnier and shorter in length. It can be purchased in lo-rider as well, especially in single cab fleet configurations. They don't advertise that one much though because they don't need to and it doesn't look as pretty.
The problem really is that when configured similarly, it's only about 1000-1500 cheaper than an F150. They believe if they sold it here alongside the F150 people would say, why shouldn't I buy the F150 instead? it's only a grand for more capability. If you think about it over a 5-6 year loan 1,000-1,500 is nothing. It's expensive because they don't built it in the US so chicken tax plus shipping it over here, plus getting it certified for safety/emissions/mpg over here.
That's the reasoning I've been told by multiple people at FoMoCo. It makes me sad because I would rather have the smaller truck.
BTW the one I drove was full 4 door cab, high rider XLT and stick shift.

Oh man, it's a real bummer, but I think Ford, unfortunately is right :(
I would love a manual diesel or turbo-gas Ranger. It's something different than the millions of F150's out there. I think if mileage were similar to my SHO it would be very tempting for me to get one.
As it stands now I'll probably at some point buy a cheap, older F150, F250 or F350, 2WD, screw the mileage, since I'll get that out of my DD, I'd mostly just want to tow some toys limited distances.

I've been tossing around the idea of getting a boat, so pretty substantial. *goes to check tow ratings for <'97 F-350*
Looks like 10,000 pounds, that should be adequate! Boats I'm looking at are probably 5,500 to 8,500 pounds.
and you are right, I have seen them for really great prices and in really good condition.
example: http://lansing.craigslist.org/cto/4658131542…
(it does have the 5.8 liter, so it tows 8,000 pounds), but it's still a decent example.
The 2wd's don't command nearly the prices 4wd OBS's do!
MontegoMan562 is a Capri RS Owner
> Yowen - not necessarily not spaghetti and meatballs
09/19/2014 at 13:57 | 0 |
4wd is GREAT at boat ramps though.
At least up here you won't have current issues, my dad's brand new silverado (a few years ago now) almost went down the river in South Carolina because of a swift current. Thankfully my mom (who had never driven the truck and didn't have her reading glasses, only distance sunglasses on) found the 4x4 button and gunned it up the ramp. saving the truck and launching the boat in one swift gas pedal stomp lol
what size boat are you looking at man?!
Yowen - not necessarily not spaghetti and meatballs
> MontegoMan562 is a Capri RS Owner

something around 24-28ft, not really set on a type of boat yet, except that it won't be a fishing boat, something along the lines of a powerquest though.
Most of the time I wouldn't be towing it to the ramp, I would get in-out storage (they use a massive diesel powered forklift to lift boats in and out of the water from rack storage) for it and tow it the few times I want to take it to Traverse City or home to work on it. I could conceivably get by without actually having a truck, but it'd be nice, but it'd have to be a cheap truck, haha. So something 2WD with a 460 fits that bill pretty well I think.

Badass.
I was expecting you to say an 18 ft bow rider or something and I was going to say you're buying way too much truck lol.
If you're not using the ramp, hell yeah save the money and get 2wd. The Taurus SHO will be better in the snow actually lol

Haha yeah, that thing does great in the snow. Don't need a winter car, haha. Which sometimes is the reasoning for people getting trucks, not for me.
This boat thing I probably wouldn't do till I get the SHO paid off. But boat payments are never as bad as you'd think because you can get much longer terms on them, they are somewhere between a car and a house in that respect.

yeah, they put in and pull out their 23 ft Stingray every time it's used. It's brackish water so its like half salt half fresh, but it'll eat the boat up real quick if left in, so they pull it and wash it every usage.
He got in an argument with a guy one day this summer who refused to believe the boat was 5 years old and was used in the river/ocean because of how clean it was.

That makes sense. With the in-out service you can really use a boat a lot easier, not trailering involved which cuts a lot of time and potential headaches out. So it's actually possible to drive to the lake on a weekday evening.
And I deal with the same thing still though, I'd also really like a classic car.
